Powerball jackpot reaches $238M for Feb. 28 drawing: Winning numbers

USA TODAY's Fernando Cervantes shares which states have claimed the most Powerball and Mega Millions jackpots wins.

The Powerball jackpot has jumped to $238 million, with a $112 million cash option, ahead of Saturday night's drawing.

According to lottery officials, the jackpot has been won nearly 200 times since the game began in 1992. Today, 48 U.S. lotteries participate in the Powerball game, with five states not offering it: Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah.

Out of the participating lotteries, the five states with the most Powerball jackpot winners include Indiana, Missouri, Minnesota, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

Do you have to be a U.S. citizen to play Powerball?

No -- you do not have to be a U.S. citizen or U.S. resident to play Powerball.

Anyone can buy a Powerball ticket while visiting one of the 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, regardless of nationality, as long as they meet the legal age of requirement.

Is there an age requirement?

Yes. Players must meet the legal age requirement at the point of purchase, which is typically 18 years old, though rules can vary slightly by location.

What non-US players should know

While citizenship is not required to play, lottery officials recommend that international visitors keep their tickets in a safe place and understand local rules for claiming prizes. Large winnings may also be subject to US taxes, including federal withholding.

How to play Powerball: What to know before buying a ticket

Powerball tickets cost $2 per play and sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Tickets can be purchased in person at authorized retailers, including convenience stores, gas stations and grocery stores. In some states, Powerball tickets are also available online, depending on local lottery rules.

How the numbers work

Each Powerball ticket incudes six numbers:Five white balls, numbered 1 through 69

One red Powerball, numbered 1 through 26

Players can choose their own numbers or use the Quick Pick option, which allows the computer to randomly select them.

What is Power Play?

For an additional $1, players can add Power Play, which increases winning for all non-jackpot prizes. The Power Play multiplier is randomly selected and can boost prizes by 2X, 3X, 4X, 5X or 10X.

How to win the jackpot

To win the Powerball jackpot, players must match all five white ballks in any order and the red Powerball.If no one matches all six numbers, the jackpot rolls over and continues to grow until won.

When are Powerball drawings held?

Powerball drawing take place three times a week:
